I confess: I was going to title this post “Wednesday Wreading” but an apparition of the Demon Lord of Bad Puns appeared to me and told me that such a pun was too much even for him. So, here’s a list of what’s occupying my eyeparts, most likely updated every week.
Fantasy Book I’m Reading:
Curling Vines & Crimson Trades is the second book in a so-far promising new series. The first book, Sunkissed Feathers & Severed Ties was an interesting fantasy story about a young warrior woman who needed to remove a cursed pendant from her chest. The story itself was not bad, but the true star of the book (for me) was the worldbuilding… different races bond to otherworldly animals and have magic crafting related to their bloodline, in a sort of combination of sorcery, elemental magic, and the Druid or Ranger bonds from old legends and newer games. This new one opens with a hell of a bang and then seems to founder for a few chapters, though the world-building and character building never stops. New magic feats and deadly conflicts are thrown at us chapter by chapter until the story takes off again, making the few chapters at the beginning more than worth it. I can’t speak for the ending, but the author did a good job of sticking it in the last one and I don’t expect to be disappointed.
Non-Fantasy Book I’m Reading:
Not as much to say about this, not yet, though A Passage to India was pretty good, and I once watched the movie quite some time ago, though since it was a Netflix and Chill Blockbuster and Bonding afternoon, I might not have paid too much attention to it. Still, it was one of the two fiction books my upcoming Colloquia in European History assigned, so I’m getting to it early.
TTRPG Blog I Devoured like a Mimic in an Empty Warehouse:
Dyson’s Dodecahedron is a blog I wish I’d learned about long before I did. The wonderful 11-Level Mega-Mini Dungeon was one of the first keys I found that led me back into the wonderful world of the Old-School Revival, but get this: there are even better things within.
This weekend I’ll be back with fantasy movies and classic books. Until then, I wish you lots of 20s and a non-laggy Virtual Tabletop.
